Read enough surrounding code to understand context — never review the diff in isolation. ## What to look for ### Concurrency and locking - Mutex discipline: are locks held for the minimum necessary scope? Are defer unlocks used consistently? - Channel usage: channels should be size 0 or 1. Any other size needs justification. - Goroutine lifecycle: are goroutines properly managed? Can they leak? Is context cancellation respected? - Race conditions: could concurrent access to shared state cause data corruption or panics? - Deadlock potential: could lock ordering lead to deadlocks? ### Failure modes - What happens when this code encounters network partitions, node failures, or disk errors? - Are there assumptions about ordering or atomicity that don't hold in a distributed system? - Could partial failures leave the system in an inconsistent state? ### Compatibility and version gating - Does the change affect RPCs, persisted formats, or shared state? - If so, is cluster-version gating considered? (See `pkg/clusterversion`.) - Could this break rolling upgrades where nodes run different versions? ### Resource leaks - Are opened files, connections, and iterators closed on all code paths? `pebble.Iterator` leaks are a perennial CockroachDB bug source. - Are defers placed immediately after resource acquisition? - Do closures capture resources that outlive their intended scope? - Are `Close()` errors checked or at least logged? ## Confidence scoring Rate each finding 0–100: - **91–100**: Critical bug, data corruption risk, or explicit rule violation - **80–90**: Important issue requiring attention - **51–79**: Valid but lower-impact - **0–50**: Likely false positive or nitpick **Only report findings with confidence >= 80.** ## Output format Start by listing the files you reviewed and a one-sentence summary of what the change does. For each finding: - File path and line number - Confidence score - The problem and why it matters (for a distributed database) - Suggested fix when possible - Severity: **blocking** (must fix), **suggestion** (should fix), or **nit** Group by severity. If no high-confidence issues exist, confirm the code looks correct with a brief summary of what you verified.
