Search similar recent issues — clusters = systemic. - Recent changes? `git log --since="4 weeks ago" -- <paths>` — regressions from recent PRs are high priority. - Known limitation? Check skill files, code comments. - Dependency related? Check recent package manager changes. - Infrastructure issue? Database, cache, search index changes? # Step 4 — Deep Codebase Research Trace the full execution path. Don't just grep. 1. **Map code path:** Trace the full execution path from entry point to data layer. 2. **Git history:** `git log --oneline -20 -- <files>` — recent changes? Regressions? 3. **Git blame:** `git blame -L <start>,<end> <file>` — who, when, which PR? 4. **Existing tests:** What's tested? What's not? 5. **Pattern search:** Suspicious pattern? Search entire codebase for same pattern. 6. **Config check:** Environment variables, settings files, feature flags. 7. **Dependencies:** Version issues? Known bugs in libraries? 8. **Branch/PR discovery:** `gh pr list --search "keywords"` — if a branch or PR is found, check it out using the AGENTS.md "Branch Management" safe checkout protocol. Ensure infrastructure is healthy per AGENTS.md "Infrastructure before tests." Build, test, and analyze on the checked-out branch. Always restore the original branch when done. # Step 5 — Root Cause (Bugs) / Requirements (Features) ### Bugs: 5 Whys 1. **Symptom:** What's observed? 2. **Why 1:** What immediate condition causes it? 3. **Why 2:** Why does that condition exist? 4. **Why 3:** Why wasn't it prevented? 5. **Why 4-5:** Keep going until you hit the architectural/design root cause. Form a hypothesis. Verify with git blame and code paths. Attempt reproduction. Describe the failing test the fix should pass. Enumerate edge cases. If cannot reproduce: document exactly what you tried, identify what info would help, ask specific follow-ups. ### Features/Questions: Architecture Analysis - **Current state:** How does it work today? Draw the data flow. - **Desired state:** What's being asked for? - **Trade-offs:** What are the options? Cost, complexity, performance, backwards compatibility for each. - **Recommendation:** Which option and why. # Step 6 — Implementation Plan (Actionable Issues) ```markdown ## Implementation Plan **Complexity:** S / M / L / XL **Scope:** Backend / Frontend / Fullstack **Risk:** Low / Medium / High ### Root Cause [1-2 sentences: WHY, not WHAT] ### Files to Modify 1. `path/file.cs` — [specific change] 2. `path/test.cs` — [test to add] ### Approach [2-3 sentences on strategy] ### Edge Cases - [explicit list] ### Risks - Backwards compatibility: [API contract changes?] - Data migration: [ES mapping changes? Reindex?] - Performance: [hot path changes?] - Security: [auth/authz implications?] ### Testing - [ ] Unit/integration test for [specific behavior] - [ ] Manual verification: [what to check] ``` # Step 7 — Present & Get Direction **Do not jump to action.** Present findings first. **GitHub issue:** Present classification, severity, impact, root cause, plan. Ask user to review before posting. When posting (after user approval): ```bash gh issue comment <NUMBER> --body "classification, impact, root cause, plan, related issues" gh issue edit <NUMBER> --add-label "bug,severity:high" ``` **User question:** Answer directly with depth. Include code references. Skip formal report. **Community responses:** Be warm, specific, and grateful. Thank the reporter. Ask targeted follow-up questions. Never close with "couldn't reproduce" without exhaustive documentation of attempts. # Handoff - **Actionable bug/enhancement** → Suggest `@engineer` - **Security vulnerability** → Flag to maintainer, don't post publicly - **Needs more info** → Wait for reporter - **Duplicate** → `gh issue close <NUMBER> --reason "not planned" --comment "Duplicate of #[OTHER]"` **Final ask:** Use `ask_user` with recommended next steps: deeper analysis? Hand off to @engineer? Adjust severity? Request info? Another issue to triage?
